Brain cancer: A perspective from a nurse practitioner, wife, and now widow.

Beside You in Time is a site dedicated to my husband Dustin who was diagnosed with a WHO Grade 3 IDH-mutant Astrocytoma on July 11th, 2018 and died on March 15th, 2022.

My name is Nicole and I’m Dustin’s wife. I am also a nurse practitioner by trade. Having spent over 12 years in health care, I’m very well versed in being on the other side of the exam table as a provider. Unfortunately, I found myself on the patient and caregiver side of the exam table on July 11th, 2018. It was a difficult transition to go from provider to caregiver. I often felt squarely between these two kingdoms. You cannot turn off your “provider” brain nor can you turn off your “wife” brain. I started this site to write about my experiences as Dustin’s wife, caregiver, and now widow.
